What’s a Co-op

A co-op is a democratic, locally-owned enterprise where people come together for the goods or services they need.

Co-op is the only grocery chain in Atlantic Canada that partners with local farmers and producers to grow and produce the food in our stores. From the fields to the aisles, together, we bring consumers an irresistible offer.

The Co-op system is unique because its beginnings were in agriculture. In 1927, a group of Maritime producers got together to share production efficiencies and market their own products. What was originally called the Maritime Livestock Board, the farmer-owned system evolved to support many types of producers.  Eventually, that premise grew to include community-owned grocery stores and wholesale distribution centers.

No other retailer, wholesaler or service provider can claim the intimate role Co-op has in producing, growing, and retailing food to Atlantic Canadians. Beef, pork, chicken, dairy, eggs, carrots, pumpkins, apples, processed foods... our reciprocal relationship means that we sell them their seeds, feed and other products and then support their business by selling their products in over 100 Co-op stores throughout Atlantic Canada.
